The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of participating.
"It's clear that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations involved, not only his injury, but additional elements," he commented.
"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. If not, we'll adjust."
Past Concerns

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in a limited period.
Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.
He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.
Alternative Arrangements
Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.
The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.
The selector characterized it as a "small issue and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."
"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
