The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
