Individuals Stopping Slimming Jabs Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such drugs need to be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to original mass in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through dieting typically experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified weight return.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the jabs report a intense return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become ravenous," said one woman.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
