Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Alliance Forged Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
