The star has handed over the complete sum of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize prize money to the MVT, which functions to protect the United Kingdom's small music venues.

He was presented with the prize on 16 October as his latest record his work was chosen as the best record of the last 12 months.

The musician has chosen to donate the funds to the Music Venues Trust, in appreciation of the vital role grassroots venues had in his beginning days.

"I personally couldn't be pursuing this success if it wasn't for all the performances I played around the region, and further afield, when I was just getting going," remarked Fender. "These spaces are iconic, but they are struggling."

Beginning in 2023, over 150 of these venues have shut down – roughly 16% of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, top acts such as the band Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the trust in its attempts to help venues survive, by adding a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which goes to help independent venues.

Fender also joined in, collecting in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to help 38 grassroots venues across Britain.

These funds assisted venues that were facing possible closure due to challenges caused by water damage, fires and personal losses, as well as permit problems, legal disputes and sound issues.

Other venues obtained financial assistance in improving amenities and technical equipment that directly benefitted performers and concertgoers.

"The idea that revenue from performances in big venues supports the smaller venues, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just logical," Fender has stated.

Fender is among several artists to give his Mercury Prize funds to good deeds.

When Pulp won the award in the mid-90s for their release the album, vocalist Cocker announced that the act would contribute their prize money to the non-profit War Child.

During 2002, musician Ms Dynamite divided her award between several good causes, like the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"Additionally, I donated a thousand pounds to the center, to their gymnastics class, because I trained in gymnastics when I was growing up and they required new equipment," she told outlets.

Two years ago, the band contributed their winnings to the local youth club that developed their group, in addition to other local music groups.

Also winners that year the group gave their winnings to a MS organization after a close contact was identified with the disease.

"Receiving the award was ample," remarked singer Small. "The prize was the extra but we could do without the extra, because we had the honor. So our winning affected the lives of others."

In the past week, the Music Venues Trust shared it had rescued a couple of grassroots venues in the South East, by transferring them to community ownership.

One venue in the city and The Croft in the city were purchased under the public acquisition scheme, which is funded by a national body and supporters who acquire "stakes" in the venues.
